UK Broadens Methanol Toxicity Alert List with 11 Nations

Toxic substance alert sign

The UK authorities has placed an additional eleven more countries to its public advisory list regarding the threats of toxic alcohol contamination from tainted spirits.

This updated travel guidance now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "a global increase in the frequency of confirmed occurrences" of industrial alcohol poisoning.

Just last month, authorities had earlier placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, in response to multiple high-profile cases like the fatal demise of 6 tourists in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being cautions that as little as tiny quantities of industrial alcohol can cause blindness or fatality within 12 to 48 hrs.

What is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Employed?

Toxic alcohol is a poisonous industrial alcohol often utilized in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and thinner. It is not intended for human consumption.

Although it is naturally produced during the creation of beverages, commercial firms bring it down to non-dangerous concentrations for ingestion through the refining procedure.

However in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into beverages to save money, and as it is tasteless and scentless, it is very difficult to notice.

Official Guidance for Travellers

Foreign Office minister Hamish Falconer stated that all travellers should know the indicators of toxic alcohol poisoning.

"While drinking spirits in foreign countries, opt for well-known venues and refrain from unlicensed drinks or complimentary drinks," the official advised.

"Should anything feels off, such as a headache that's far more intense than normal or vision problems – seek medical attention immediately."

The full roster of countries noted as presenting a danger of toxic alcohol toxicity currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
