Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation Head James Comey Enters Innocent Plea to Charges of Misleading Congress
Previous FBI chief James the ex-FBI chief has pleaded not guilty to making false statements to lawmakers and impeding a legislative process.
Mr Comey's attorney submitted the plea on his behalf in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.
Patrick Fitzgerald stated he would seek to have the proceedings dismissed for multiple causes including that his the accused, a opponent of President Donald Trump, was being singled out.
Mr Comey was indicted shortly after the former president pushed his chief prosecutor to take action against him.
Judicial Process
During the hearing on mid-week, his attorney Patrick Fitzgerald informed the judge they aimed to submit various motions to terminate the legal matter before a legal hearing, arguing the legal action was retaliatory and that a federal prosecutor was unlawfully appointed to take over the case.
Mr Comey's case was first overseen by a Virginia prosecutor, who left his position under pressure from Donald Trump after his probe into another political adversary - New York Attorney General Letitia James - was unable to initiate prosecution.
Courtroom Atmosphere
James Comey came across in positive mood as he came into the legal venue on Wednesday, chatting with his lawyers and making jokes. He was supported by his wife, Patrice Failor and offspring Maureen Comey, a federal prosecutor who the former government terminated.
After listening to the court recite his rights and the pair of allegations against him in court on Wednesday, Mr Comey was asked if he comprehended the charges.
"Absolutely your honour. Thank you," he told the court.
Previous Events
The former director was the FBI Director from 2013 to 2017 and was terminated about four months into Donald Trump's initial presidency as commander-in-chief. At the period, the director was directing an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any connections between the Russian government and the election effort.
Throughout his leadership, the director sparked a negative reaction from liberal politicians when he stated just shortly prior to the national vote that he was examining political contender Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. Legal actions against the candidate were not pursued, resulting in disapproval from conservative politicians as well.
Present Charges
The federal government claim James Comey gave untrue statements to US lawmakers during a congressional hearing in 2020 when he was being examined about both the email probe as well as the Russia election probe. They say he misled the Senate by claiming he had not permitted a person at the agency to release to journalistic entities details about the FBI investigations.
Legal representatives also charge the defendant of "improperly attempting to affect, obstruct and impede" the panel by providing untrue information to it.
Public Statements
In a video Mr Comey shared to his social media after he was accused, he said he was not guilty and alleged Donald Trump of behaving like a "dictator".
"We have understood for years that there are ramifications to challenging the former president," he stated. "We will not live on our knees."
"I am not guilty," he continued. "Therefore proceed with a trial."
The accusations against James Comey came after the former president shared on digital channels calling for his top legal official, the attorney general, prosecute the former director and others.
