Major Web Outage Hits Dozens Online Platforms and Apps
A widespread online failure has impacted many websites and applications worldwide, as users reporting problems getting online after problems at the online infrastructure system.
The disrupted platforms comprise Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and Duolingo, in addition to a host of Amazon-owned operations including its primary shopping platform and the Ring security doorbell company.
Across the United Kingdom, the financial institution Lloyds was disrupted in addition to its branches the bank Halifax and Bank of Scotland, and also reports of issues using the HMRC site on Monday morning. Also in the UK, multiple Ring device owners took to online platforms to state their doorbells were failing.
Solely in the United Kingdom, notifications of disruptions on individual apps ran into the tens of thousands for each app.
Officials confirmed that the outage originated in the east coast of the US at Amazon Web Services, a division that supplies essential internet infrastructure for many businesses, who utilize space on Amazon servers. The cloud platform is the most extensive online services system.
Just after the start of the day (PDT) in the US (morning UK time), Amazon confirmed “higher error rates and delays” for Amazon's platforms in a region on the eastern US of the America. The cascading impact appeared to affect services around the world, and the problem monitoring service indicating outages with the same sites in various regions.
The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a tool that tracks web disruptions, further indicated a surge in outages on that morning, and numerous instances located in the Virginia area, the location of the eastern US data center where officials confirmed the issues started.
